Created by a tech-savvy lawyer out of Seattle, Washington, Avvo is basically the Google for lawyers. This website allows you to search for lawyers based on geographic location and practice area, utilize the Q&A Forum for any legal questions, and even call a lawyer directly.
As a lawyer, having a high ranking on the site is a way to get new clients. Why would someone hire a 8.0 lawyer when they could hire a 10.0 lawyer if all other details are the same? Avvo uses a mathematical algorithm to determine ratings, and becoming familiar with how the algorithm works is the first step in creating a superb profile.
Avvo uses a 10-point rating system based on lawyers’ backgrounds and information that is input into the site. Ratings are calculated using a mathematical model based on profile information. This information includes years of practice, disciplinary history, professional achievements, and industry recognition.
Avvo will also automatically collect and evaluate background data on a lawyer based on other online information. Information is pulled from state bar associations, court records, public records, and other legal sites.
To calculate a profile rating, different weights are assigned to the profile information. However, Avvo does not specify how the information is rated in order to keep people from gaming the system.
To earn a high profile score, each section must be filled out specific to your area of practice, you must have a mix of client reviews and peer endorsements, and you must also contribute to the website regularly.
